Flooring for floor heating

Floor heating can virtually be used under any floor finish. The best floor type for floor heating is the one with a good thermal conductivity to enhance the floor to heat up quicker, give more heat output and run more efficiently. The only difference between which floor finish to use with a floor heating system is the thermal conductivity of the material.

Laminate

Laminate flooring is increasingly popular in all types of households. The practicality of this flooring material, cost-value, and the fact it visually suits every décor since one can find laminate is all shades, makes it a common floor surface. Laminate is well compatible with electric floor heating.

Wood

Engineered timber is the best type of wood flooring to use with an electric floor heating system as it performs well with changes in floor temperature. Other wood flooring may also be used, but with softer and less dense wood, attention must be paid to the thickness of floorboards so that they do not act as an insulator blocking the heat.

Vinyl

Vinyl flooring can be safely used with electric floor heating. Vinyl heats up and cools down quickly. Vinyl floors are subject to a top floor temperature restriction, usually 27 °C, limiting the heat output so they are not recommended in high heat loss areas.

Polished concrete

Due to their high thermal-mass, concrete floors are ideal to be heated by a floor heating system. Concrete provides quick heat-up times and retains heat well, even storing the warmth produced by solar gain, making a heated polished concrete floor a great option to improve the comfort and warmth of a home.

Carpet

Carpet is suitable for use with electric floor heating provided that the material of the carpet or underlay does not act as an insulator blocking the heat. The total tog of all materials, including any under and overlays, must not exceed 1,5 tog in order for the system to provide sufficient heat output.

Best floor finish to use with electric floor heating

Our range of electric floor heating systems offers great flexibility for use with all floor finishes. The best type of flooring to use with electric floor heating is arguably tile and stone. Tile and stone have high thermal conductivity, meaning that the heat from the system transfers to the floor surface quickly.

Engineered timber is the best type of wooden flooring to use with an electric floor heating system as it performs well with changes in floor temperature. Other wood flooring and laminate flooring may also be used, but with softer and less dense wood, attention must be paid to the thickness of floorboards so they do not act as an insulator.

Installing floor insulation

We recommend installing good quality insulation with the electric floor heating system. Insulation reduces heat-loss, keeping the heat produced by the heating system in the room. Our range of insulation also improve the heat-up times of our systems – enhancing the energy-efficiency of the electric floor heating system and offering even lower long-term running costs.

Our insulation products work with every floor type.
